Terme Fier Bubullime draws chlorurated thermal springs near Fier in the coastal lowland of central Albania, where geothermal water emerges from the sedimentary formations of the Albanian Adriatic basin in a flat agricultural landscape of citrus groves and oil palm plantations that marks the transition between the highland interior and the coastal marshes of the Adriatic shore. Fifteen kilometres from the thermal springs lies the archaeological site of Apollonia, one of the most important Greek colonial cities of the Adriatic founded by Corinthians in 588 BC, where the young Augustus, future first Emperor of Rome, studied rhetoric and philosophy under the Greek philosopher Athenodorus Cananites in 44 BC before receiving news of Julius Caesar's assassination that changed the course of Roman and world history. The ruins of Apollonia, with their Bouleuterion, their odeon, their library, and the medieval monastery built into the ancient walls, constitute one of the finest classical archaeological ensembles in the western Balkans, and the thermal springs of Bubullime provide a warm counterpart to the cool academic atmosphere of the ancient philosophical city just down the road.

Insider tip — Apollonia (Apoloni), 15 km away, is the ancient Greek city where Augustus — the future first emperor of Rome — studied rhetoric in 44 BC before learning of the assassination of Caesar, his adoptive uncle. His imperial destiny was sealed here.
