Bains de Mer Ostende is a thalassotherapy centre on the North Sea coast of Belgium in Ostende, the royal seaside resort that King Leopold II transformed from a modest fishing port into the most elegant bathing destination on the Channel coast during the Belle Epoque, constructing a seafront of neoclassical villas, a royal pavilion, and a racecourse that earned the city its reputation as the Biarritz of the north. The iodine-rich waters of the southern North Sea have a particularly high concentration of sea salts and marine trace elements thanks to the shallow tidal flats and estuarine mixing of the Flemish coastline, long appreciated as the basis of the seawater bathing tradition here.
