The Sauvenière Spring in Spa, Belgium, is one of the historic mineral springs that gave the English language the word 'spa' — the town of Spa in the Ardennes hills of Liège province was so celebrated as a mineral water destination from the 16th century onwards that its name became the universal term for health resorts worldwide. The Sauvenière's sulphurous, naturally carbonated water, bottled and shipped across Europe for centuries, was sought out by kings, queens, and aristocrats within a long tradition of mineral water culture. The spring, accessible via the picturesque Promenade de Sept Heures, remains one of the key stops on Spa's heritage mineral water trail through the Ardennes hills.
