Nestled in the Rhodope Mountains, Velingrad has held the title "Spa Capital of the Balkans" since 2008, after being named Spa Capital of Bulgaria in 2005. The town counts more than 80 mineral springs, hot and cold, sitting atop the largest geothermal field in southern Bulgaria. Formed in 1948 from the merger of three villages, Chepino, Ladzhene and Kamenitsa, used since Roman times.

Insider tip — Listen to a "Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices" concert (Rhodope polyphony) in a local village - a stunning sonic experience.
