Insider tip — Dur Hot Springs are among the most remote thermal springs in the Himalayas, reached only by a multi-day trek through dense blue pine and rhododendron forest in Bhutan's Bumthang district, at an altitude approaching 3,700 meters. The sulfurous water emerges at scalding temperatures from volcanic fissures and is traditionally used by Bhutanese communities for treating arthritis and skin ailments in weeklong bathing retreats called tshachu. The trek to Dur is itself a highlight, crossing high passes with views of the eastern Himalayan chain. Permits through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator are mandatory for access.
