In Vals, in the canton of Graubünden, the 7132 Therme owes its renown to architect Peter Zumthor, winner of the 2009 Pritzker Prize, who designed it between 1993 and 1996. The village had bought back in 1983 a 1960s hotel complex built by a German developer who later went bankrupt, before commissioning this new facility around the local thermal springs.
The building is made from 60,000 slabs of Vals quartzite, cut into one-meter strips laid horizontally, in a composition conceived as an architectural interpretation of a stone quarry. Listed as a historical building just two years after completion, it remains regarded as one of Zumthor's major works, its local stone shaping indoor and outdoor pools in constant dialogue with the surrounding alpine landscape.
