Scuol is a mountain resort town in the Lower Engadine valley of the canton of Graubunden in eastern Switzerland, where bicarbonate-rich naturally carbonated mineral springs have been exploited since the Middle Ages and where the local Rhaeto-Romanic language, Romansh, is still spoken daily — a living relic of the ancient Roman provincial culture that first documented the springs. The thermal complex Bogn Engiadina Scuol draws on multiple springs of varying mineral compositions for its Roman-Irish bathing ritual, combining hot and cold pools, steam, massage, and outdoor thermal pools with panoramic views of the glaciated peaks of the Silvretta range. Scuol and the Lower Engadine preserve the Romansh language — the fourth official language of Switzerland and a direct descendant of Vulgar Latin — in a cultural landscape of stone villages, decorated facades, and Engadine farmhouses that makes this thermal valley one of the most linguistically and architecturally distinctive in the Alps.

Insider tip — Scuol's Bogn Engiadina wellness center channels the famous Engadin mineral springs — among the most mineral-rich in Europe — into a dramatic alpine spa overlooking the Inn River gorge in the Lower Engadin valley. The spring water is so carbonated it was once bottled for export across Europe. The contrast bathing circuits using glacial cold pools alongside 38°C thermal pools are especially invigorating.
