Kulm Hotel Spa is situated in St. Moritz in the Canton of Graubünden, the birthplace of Alpine winter tourism — in 1864, hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a bet with his British summer guests that if they came to St. Moritz in winter they would find sunshine rather than grey skies, promising to pay their expenses if they were disappointed; the guests came, stayed for the entire winter, and discovered that the Engadine Valley's champagne climate of 300+ sunny days per year was even more glorious in snow, launching the entire concept of the winter sports holiday that would spread across the Alps. The Kulm Hotel was the venue for Badrutt's original bet and has since hosted the St. Moritz bobsled run, the Cresta Run skeleton course (operating since 1885), and generations of European royalty and international celebrities whose patronage made St. Moritz synonymous with Alpine luxury. The hotel's spa draws on oligomineral Engadine spring waters in an establishment that is genuinely the cradle of Alpine winter tourism.
