In the Los Ríos region, at the foot of the Andes, Liquiñe takes its name from Mapudungún, meaning 'weeping eyes' -- a poetic name given by the Mapuche people, who have gathered at these springs for generations as places of community. The waters rise here along the Liquiñe-Ofqui geological fault system, which cuts through the South American plate and lets deep fluids surface.
Rich in sulfur, silica, potash, lithium, copper and iron, these hyperthermal waters today feed the Coñaripe-Liquiñe-Panguipulli thermal route, a network of 17 centers and 35 springs said to form the largest thermal-water complex in South America -- a landscape to explore amid Valdivian forest, rivers and Andean peaks.
Insider tip — Termas de Liquine sit in Chilean Patagonia's lake district, where the Andes' volcanic spine concentrates intense geothermal activity, producing some of the hottest sulfurous waters in South America. Over a dozen independent spring complexes cluster in the Liquine river valley, set beneath ancient coihue beech and araucaria forests that are protected as part of Villarrica National Park. The remote dirt road approach through dense temperate rainforest is itself an attraction, with condors occasionally visible on the thermals above. Temperatures often exceed 60°C at the source, so operators channel water into tiled pools where it cools to a comfortable 40-45°C.
