Yichun Hot Springs in Jilin province, in the vast forests of northeastern China's Da Xing'an Ling (Greater Khingan Range), are located within one of the world's largest temperate forest zones — a landscape of Korean pine, Siberian larch and Mongolian oak that covers the entire upland region between Manchuria and Siberia. The naturally warm bicarbonate springs emerge from the crystalline basement of this ancient geological formation, and the forest setting of deep silence and clean air gives the thermal experience a quality of wilderness immersion rare in China's densely populated interior. The Yichun forest region is China's most important timber production zone, and its conservation has become increasingly prioritised, with expanding nature reserves protecting the Amur tiger, brown bear and Siberian crane that inhabit the same forests. The thermal springs provide a year-round attraction in a region whose extreme northern winter (-40°C) makes warm bathing particularly appealing.

Insider tip — Yichun in the Greater Khingan Range of northeastern China is a forested timber city now developing thermal tourism around its bicarbonate mineral springs. The surrounding taiga forest of Manchurian firs and birches gives this remote destination an untouched wilderness character. Spring and autumn foliage seasons transform the landscape and draw visitors from Harbin and beyond.
