Hailuogou Hot Springs in the Hailuogou Glacier Scenic Area of Sichuan Province emerge at the edge of the glacier tongue, creating one of China's most dramatic thermal contrasts — warm bicarbonate spring water flowing within sight of a vast Himalayan glacier descending from Gongga Mountain (7,556 m), one of the highest peaks in China outside the Tibetan core. The springs' mineral-rich waters are coloured turquoise by dissolved minerals, forming terraced travertine formations reminiscent of Yellowstone or Pamukkale on a smaller scale. Hailuogou's geothermal activity is a surface expression of the same crustal forces that produced the Tibetan Plateau's uplift, making it one of China's most geologically spectacular thermal sites.
Insider tip — Sources Hailuogou are geothermal springs within Hailuogou Glacier National Park at the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, where glacial meltwater and volcanic heat coexist in dramatic proximity. Bathing pools are positioned to offer direct views of China's largest monsoon glacier descending from Gongga Mountain, at 7556 metres the highest peak in Sichuan. The contrast of steaming 45°C water with ice-blue glacial seracs just hundreds of metres away is among the most visually extraordinary hot spring experiences in Asia. Arrive early in the day before afternoon clouds obscure the mountain views.
