Tangshan Hot Spring in Nanjing's Jiangning District, Jiangsu Province, is one of China's longest-continuously-used geothermal sites, with records of imperial bathing dating back to the Six Dynasties period (3rd–6th centuries CE) and continued use through the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The sulfated and calcium-rich waters emerge from the granite formations underlying the Tangshan hills, historically valued by Nanjing's successive imperial courts for their therapeutic and recreational properties. Today Tangshan is a major thermal resort district offering dozens of hotels and spa facilities within easy reach of Nanjing's extraordinary concentration of Ming Dynasty imperial heritage, making it both a living geothermal tradition and a culturally embedded part of one of China's most historic cities.
