Tangshan Hot Spring, located approximately 30 kilometres north of Beijing in the Miyun district at the foot of the Yanshan mountains, draws on chloride thermal waters in a geothermal zone that has provided imperial and aristocratic bathing since the Tang dynasty — the Tang emperor Taizong is said to have bathed here, giving the spring its name, and successive Ming and Qing dynasty emperors maintained retreat villas at this historically venerated thermal site. The naturally warm saline chloride waters, continuously enjoyed for over 1,400 years of documented use, are appreciated for relaxation and the sense of connection with an ancient bathing tradition. The site's proximity to the Mutianyu and Jinshanling sections of the Great Wall — some of the best-preserved and most dramatically situated stretches of this UNESCO World Heritage structure — makes a visit to Tangshan Hot Spring a natural complement to the Great Wall experience in the mountains north of Beijing.

Insider tip — Tangshan Hot Spring lies in the Miyun hills northeast of central Beijing, tapping mildly saline geothermal waters used since the Qing dynasty to supply imperial bathhouses. The modest 36°C temperature makes it well-suited for long soaks and family visits. The surrounding valley is lush with walnut orchards and apple groves, best visited in September at harvest time. Several Ming-dynasty temple ruins are accessible by trail within a short walk of the resort.
