The sodium-chloride waters carry a faint sea mineral note, distinguishing them from the purely terrestrial springs of the Kyushu volcanic zone. The surrounding area features important Shinto shrines including Hofu Tenmangu, one of Japan's three great Tenmangu shrines dedicated to the deity of learning.
