Insider tip — Tai Gang Ye Xi Wenquan is a riverside hot spring in the wild gorge country of Hualien, where the sulfurous waters of the Central Range pour directly into outdoor creek-side pools. The high mineral concentration and vigorous 42°C temperature make this a favourite recovery stop for cyclists completing the legendary Suhua Highway coastal route. Pools are carved from natural riverbed rock and partially shaded by bamboo canopies. The morning hours before 9 am offer solitude, birdsong, and steam rising dramatically over cold mountain air.
