Nestled at the foot of Arenal Volcano, Tabacón Thermal Resort was the vision of Costa Rican architect Jaime Mikowski, who spent two years bringing it to life before its opening in April 1993. The property spreads across nearly 300 hectares of rainforest, where a natural thermal river — unique in the region — winds through lush gardens and cascading waterfalls.

Heated by the volcano's geothermal energy, the site features 18 mineral-rich pools ranging from refreshingly cool to warmly enveloping. The resort is also home to a spa recognised among the Leading Spas of the World since 2007, along with restaurants and bars scattered through the greenery, for a full immersion in nature and relaxation.

Insider tip — Tabacón is a natural thermal river warmed by Arenal volcano, winding through tropical jungle with warm cascades along the way. Book your day pass in advance. Come in the evening when the jungle lights up and the atmosphere turns almost otherworldly — far quieter than the busy midday hours. Temperature varies depending on where you settle in the river.
