Lázně Jáchymov Radon

Lázně Jáchymov is the world's first radon spa, located in the historic mining town of Jáchymov in the Karlovy Vary Region of western Bohemia, Czech Republic, where uranium-rich ores mined from the late 15th century onward gave rise to the discovery of radioactive radon in the thermal waters that now form the basis of this uniquely specialized resort. The bicarbonate-mineral radon waters of Jáchymov have been used in bathing since 1906, within a long thermal tradition associated with well-being and the comfort of joints and muscles. This remarkable spa town, which gave its name to the Joachimsthaler silver coin—the etymological origin of the word 'dollar'—combines a singular industrial and scientific history with one of Central Europe's most distinctive thermal bathing traditions.
