It all began with a geological surprise: on 12 February 1983, oil company Texaco drilled 2,350 metres below ground near Erding, Bavaria, searching for oil — and struck sulfurous water instead. The foundation stone of the current complex was laid on 10 November 1998, with an official opening on 3 October 1999.
Since then, Therme Erding has grown into the largest thermal spa complex in the world, just thirty minutes from Munich. In 2007, the Galaxy waterslide park opened, one of Europe's biggest indoor slide parks with twenty slides, alongside a 12,900 m² sauna world that ranks among the largest anywhere. Around 4,000 visitors a day wander through its pools and relaxation areas.
