Set within the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve, AlbThermen Bad Urach owes its existence to a scientific hunch more than 150 years in the making: expert reports had concluded that deep drilling in this region would reveal hyperthermal mineral water. In 1969, three residents of the Erms valley, together with ministerial councilor Rudolf Illing, founded the drilling companies that led to the spa's opening in the early 1970s.
Fully redesigned and renovated in 2007, the baths welcomed notable 1970s guests such as Peter Alexander and Heinz Rühmann, and remain regarded as one of Europe's most traditional thermal spa establishments, set amid the preserved landscape of the Swabian Alb.
