Spot: Oberharz Kneipp Bad Clausthal-Zellerfeld (Germany)
This list records the former spa towns in Germany that were once awarded the title of spa resort or climatic health resort, but which no longer hold that status owing to external changes, incorporation into a municipality, or the cessation of spa activity. Some of these places nonetheless continue to use the title of spa resort or climatic health resort by tradition, either in the municipality's name or for tourism promotion purposes.
Insider tip — At 600 metres above sea level, Clausthal-Zellerfeld is the highest town in the Harz mountains and its Kneipp bicarbonate spa draws on springs that percolate through ancient silver-mining country. The bicarbonate water at 40°C soothes muscles worn by the Harz's demanding trails, including the classic Brocken ascent nearby. The town's historic mining heritage, preserved in the Oberharzer Bergwerksmuseum, provides vivid context for an afternoon between soaks.
