Svømmehallen Maribo Søerne

Svommehallen Maribo Soerne is an indoor swimming complex drawing on the oligomineral waters of the Maribo lakes in southern Lolland, the flat agricultural island that lies at the southern edge of Denmark between the Baltic Sea and the Fehmarnbelt strait, in a landscape of medieval monasteries, sugar beet fields, and coastal wetlands whose extraordinary flatness and maritime light give Lolland a character unlike any other part of Denmark. Maribo itself is a small cathedral town whose Brigittine convent, one of the most important religious houses of the Baltic region in the fifteenth century, was dissolved at the Reformation but whose late Gothic cathedral and medieval street plan survive in a quiet town centre that feels genuinely unchanged since the period of its greatest religious importance. The Fehmarnbelt fixed link, the immersed tunnel being constructed under the strait between Lolland and the German island of Fehmarn at nineteen kilometres the longest road and rail tunnel in the world when completed, will transform Maribo's position from a quiet island backwater to a transit corridor between Scandinavia and Central Europe, giving the lakes and their spa complex a new significance as a rest stop on one of northern Europe's most important new infrastructure connections.
