Baños de Benasque is a historic spa site set high in the Pyrenees of Huesca, Aragon, at 1,720 metres altitude within the magnificent Benasque Valley surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Pyrenean chain including Aneto (3,404 m), the range's highest summit. The sulphurous springs were developed into a formal balneario in the 18th century serving aristocratic visitors from across Spain, though the historic spa buildings have since fallen into disuse and the site is now primarily of heritage interest. The natural sulphurous waters continue to flow through the valley in a landscape of extraordinary Alpine grandeur, glacial lakes, and Pyrenean pine forests managed within the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park. Baños de Benasque represents a poignant chapter of Pyrenean spa history set within one of Spain's most spectacular mountain environments.

Insider tip — Baños de Benasque sit at nearly 1700 meters in the Ésera valley of the Aragonese Pyrenees, one of the highest thermal establishments in Spain, surrounded by peaks exceeding 3000 meters including the Aneto summit. The sulfurous waters have been used since Roman times and were especially popular among mountaineers in the 19th century. Late summer is ideal, when the hiking trails above are snow-free and the balneario's warm pools provide welcome relief after a day in the high mountains.
