In the Cévennes hills of the Hérault, the Sainte-Odile spring was discovered in 1736 by the Marquis Pons Rosset de Rocozels, and a facility was built nearby as early as 1743. The water follows a decades-long underground journey through layers of dolomite and dolomitic limestone, gradually gathering minerals before resurfacing at a steady flow of around 70,000 litres per hour.
Recognized as being of public benefit by the Academy of Medicine in 1874 and state-approved the same year, the center was taken over in 1975 by Pierre Fabre Laboratories, which modernized the facilities and developed the "Avène Thermal Spring Water" brand. Today, several thousand visitors still travel here each year for stays focused on skin comfort.
