Facing the Thau lagoon, Balaruc-les-Bains carries on a thermal tradition dating back to Antiquity: Roman legions already came here to rest and tend their wounds, in a settlement equipped with a temple dedicated to Neptune and the Nymphs, where an aqueduct fed a vast elliptical pool lined with white marble. In the 16th century, Rabelais himself mentioned the waters of Balaruc in Gargantua, a sign of the site's lasting fame across the centuries, before the town was officially granted the status of climatic resort in 1927.

Since 2015, the thermal establishment has featured a contemporary spa shaped like a ship's hull, its white structures reflecting light along the Promenade des Bains. Structured as a local public operating company as early as 2012 — a unique status in France for this sector — the site draws water rich in bicarbonates and trace elements, among the hottest and most mineralised in the Languedoc region, today associated with joint comfort, circulation and sports recovery.

Insider tip — After the baths, cross the lagoon to taste Bouzigues oysters directly from the producers — one of the finest pairings of gastronomy and thermalism in France.
