Contrexéville in the Vosges département of Lorraine is one of France's most famous mineral water towns, whose sulphate-calcium springs have been exported worldwide under the Contrex brand since the late 19th century. The thermal resort, developed on a grand scale in the Belle Époque with palatial pump rooms, parks and cure hotels in the style of international spas of the period, retains an atmosphere of faded elegance from this golden age. The sulphate-calcium mineral water is cold and traditionally enjoyed as a drinking cure — ingested rather than bathed in — in the long-standing tradition of French balneology. Contrexéville and the adjacent thermal town of Vittel together form the principal hydro-mineral centre of Lorraine, set in the gently rolling pastoral landscape of the Vosges plateau.
