In Bagnères-de-Luchon, the tradition of thermal bathing dates back to Roman times: the town, then called Ilixon, already had public baths fed by a multitude of hot Pyrenean springs. In the 18th century, Baron d'Étigny revived the site, before a new establishment, designed by architect Edmond Chambert and inaugurated in 1857, ushered in its golden age: Napoleon III and the imperial family stayed here, soon followed by illustrious visitors such as Lamartine.
The arrival of the railway in 1873 and the construction of the casino in 1880 cemented Luchon's place as one of the most fashionable resorts in the central Pyrenees, combining thermal tradition, hiking, and listed architectural heritage. Today, the town still blends this historic thermal legacy with skiing, mountain biking and hiking trails, set against a preserved Pyrenean backdrop.
