Thermes de Rochefort are located in Rochefort, a remarkable planned royal city on the Charente estuary in Charente-Maritime, built from scratch by Colbert in 1666 on the orders of Louis XIV to serve as the French Navy's premier arsenal and shipyard — a city of extraordinary architectural unity where the grid-plan streets, formal squares, and monumental buildings of the Sun King's maritime ambition are preserved almost intact. The city's most spectacular monument is the Corderie Royale, a 374-meter rope-making workshop — one of the longest buildings in France — now a heritage site and museum documenting the naval rope-making craft that outfitted the ships of France's royal fleet. Rochefort is also the birthplace of Pierre Loti, the Romantic novelist and naval officer whose exotic travel memoirs made him one of 19th-century France's most celebrated writers, and whose extraordinarily decorated house remains the city's most visited literary site.
