In the Simav district of western Anatolia, the Eynal Kaplıcaları occupy a site used since antiquity: baths are said to have stood here in Phrygian times, later maintained through Roman, Seljuk and Ottoman use. In 1671, the celebrated Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi visited the site and admiringly recorded the architecture of the baths and their effect on local people.
The water rises from underground at a temperature exceeding 160°C, before being cooled to 70-80°C for use in the pools. Rich in sulfates, bicarbonates, sodium and bromides, with a total mineralization of roughly 2 grams per litre, the site earned official recognition as a thermal tourism centre from Turkey's Council of Ministers in 1989.
