Caldas da Imperatriz is a historic thermal district in the municipality of Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Santa Catarina, Brazil, whose name commemorates Empress Teresa Cristina of Brazil — consort of Emperor Pedro II — who bathed in these thermal springs during the imperial period of the nineteenth century, giving the site its royal association and cementing its status as one of Brazil's most historically significant thermal destinations. The thermomineral springs of Santa Catarina emerge in the lush Atlantic Forest landscape of the coastal mountain range, where geothermal waters have been valued within a long thermal tradition since colonial times. The site continues to attract visitors to its historic thermal facilities nestled in the forested valleys of southern Brazil's Serra do Mar.

Insider tip — Caldas da Imperatriz, in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz (Santa Catarina), is one of the oldest and most elegant thermal resorts in Brazil. Its name honours Empress Leopoldina, wife of Pedro I, who visited the springs in 1822. The Grand Hotel Caldas da Imperatriz, an Art Deco monument in the heart of the Serra da Cangalha, is listed as national heritage.
