Aguas Termales del Manantial del Peñón refers to the thermal mineral springs of El Peñón de los Baños, a volcanic rock formation in the Venustiano Carranza borough of Mexico City that is one of two pueblos originarios — original indigenous communities — of this delegation and was the site of thermal springs and bathing facilities used since the pre-Columbian period when the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan occupied the island in Lake Texcoco. The springs of El Peñón de los Baños were among the most significant thermal resources in the Valley of Mexico during the colonial period, when mineral waters from the volcanic substrate of the Mexico City basin were channeled for therapeutic and recreational bathing in establishments serving the colonial capital's growing population. Today the thermal spring heritage of El Peñón de los Baños is embedded in the urban fabric of one of the world's largest cities, preserving a connection to the geothermal resources that once served the Aztec Empire at the center of the Mexican highlands.
