Aguas Termales San Cristóbal is a thermal spring complex in the Huancavelica department of Peru's central Andes, celebrated for its striking turquoise-colored waters that shimmer with dissolved minerals and emit wisps of steam against the austere highland plateau landscape at elevations typical of the Peruvian puna. The vivid coloration of the pools results from the particular mineral chemistry of the sulfurous waters and their interaction with the volcanic and sedimentary geology of the Huancavelica basin, a region historically important as the site of the colonial mercury mines that supplied the silver refineries of Potosí. The thermal pools provide a dramatic natural spectacle while offering warming relief at high altitude in one of Peru's least-visited but most historically significant regions.
