On the edge of Joshua Tree in the California desert, Wonder Valley Hot Springs grew out of a project by Doug and Sivan, who converted old homesteader cabins into a modern retreat with globally inspired interiors. The 20-acre property draws on an underground hot springs river fed by three wells, with sources ranging from roughly 125 to 135°F before the water is channelled into the soaking tubs.
Each tub, hand-carved from granite boulders sourced in Indonesia, connects to a geothermal mineral spring more than 300 feet below ground. The site sits within the wider history of Wonder Valley itself, settled from the late 1930s onward under the Small Tract Act, whose small homestead cabins still dot the surrounding desert landscape today.
Insider tip — Wonder Valley Hot Springs lies in the remote high desert east of Joshua Tree National Park, a rugged landscape of boulder fields, creosote flats, and abandoned homestead cabins. The iron-rich spring waters feed small soaking pools that attract desert wanderers and overlanders seeking warmth after cold Mojave nights. Access requires a high-clearance vehicle and navigation of unmarked desert tracks, adding an expedition quality to the visit. The star-gazing from the pools on moonless nights, far from city light pollution, is among the finest in Southern California.
