Sources Thermales de Thermopyles draws magnesium-rich geothermal water at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece, where the hot springs that gave the pass its ancient name — the Hot Gates — emerge directly beside the monument to Leonidas and the three hundred Spartans who defended the narrow coastal corridor against the Persian army of Xerxes in 480 BC in the most celebrated last stand in Western military history. The springs flow at temperatures between 37 and 50 degrees Celsius from geological vents in the limestone of the coastal escarpment, and bathing here in water whose vapour wreathed the battleground where Simonides inscribed his unforgettable epitaph is an experience that overlays mineral wellness bathing with the most charged layer of Classical memory available anywhere in Greece. The Thermopylae springs have been in continuous use for over 2,500 years, making them among the longest-documented hot spring sites in Europe, their mineral-rich magnesium water appreciated for muscular relaxation and circulatory comfort in a setting where the landscape has changed remarkably little since the Persian Wars.

Insider tip — To bathe in the springs of Thermopylae is to bathe where Leonidas and his 300 were dying in 480 BC as Xerxes' Persians encircled the pass. The heat of the springs gave its name (Hot Gates) to the most heroic site of Antiquity.
