FGB-1 is a thermal production well in the Pannonian Basin geothermal field of Hungary or the border region, where a borehole tapping the deep bicarbonate-rich geothermal aquifer supplies thermal water at elevated temperature for a spa facility or thermal bathing complex. Hungary's modern thermal industry relies extensively on deep geothermal wells like this one, which can tap water at 50-100°C from depths of hundreds to thousands of metres beneath the Pannonian plain. The extraordinary productivity of the Pannonian geothermal system — which powers over 1,300 thermal facilities across Hungary and neighbouring countries — makes deep thermal wells like FGB-1 the foundation of Central Europe's most developed geothermal bathing culture.
Insider tip — Sturovo sits on the Danube River directly across from the Hungarian city of Esztergom, and its geothermal well taps the same deep Triassic limestone aquifer that feeds Hungary's famous thermal bath culture across the border. At 42 degrees Celsius, the water is among the warmer examples of Pannonian geothermal output in Slovakia.
