FGK-1 is a thermal production well in the Pannonian Basin geothermal system of Hungary or its border region, providing bicarbonate-rich geothermal water from deep within the ancient marine sedimentary aquifer that underlies the entire Carpathian Basin. Hungary's intensive geothermal well-drilling programme, initiated in the mid-20th century under the socialist state to develop thermal bathing as a social welfare resource, created hundreds of deep geothermal bores across the country. The thermal water produced by this well contributes to the rich fabric of Hungarian gyógyfürdő (thermal bath) culture that has made Hungary the most geothermally developed country in Central Europe.

Insider tip — This high-temperature geothermal well near Komarno, a Slovak-Hungarian border city on the Danube, produces water at 55 degrees Celsius before being cooled for bathing use. The Pannonian Basin heat anomaly is particularly pronounced here due to thin crustal structure beneath the Great Hungarian Plain. Komarno's unique feature is its Europa Square district where architectural replicas of buildings from across Europe create a surreal streetscape near the spa. The thermal complex serves as a year-round amenity for residents of both the Slovak and Hungarian sides of the city.
