Unakoti Hot Spring in Tripura, northeastern India, combines geothermal mineral bathing with one of the subcontinent's most mysterious archaeological sites — the Unakoti rock carvings, a vast complex of bas-relief Hindu deities carved into jungle cliff faces dating to the 7th–9th centuries AD, whose name means 'one less than a crore' (ten million) in Bengali mythology. The bicarbonate-calcium thermal waters emerge near the monumental Shiva sculptures and are held sacred by Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the springs as a devotional purification practice before worshipping the ancient cliff carvings. The surrounding jungle hills of Tripura bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar shelter extraordinary biodiversity in one of India's most remote and least-visited states, far from the established tourism circuits.
