Near Dehradun, in the state of Uttarakhand, Sahastradhara — literally "the thousandfold spring" — takes its name from the way the water trickles down through the surrounding limestone rock in countless rivulets, picking up sulphur along the way. The site is closely tied to Hindu legend: local tradition places the residence of sage Dronacharya, teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas of the Mahabharata, here, and recounts sages who came to meditate in the nearby natural caves.

The place saw organised tourism take shape during the British colonial period, when officers would visit to escape the summer heat in a cooler, quieter setting. Today, this landscape of green hills and waterfalls remains a popular getaway just outside Dehradun.

Insider tip — Sahastradhara — meaning thousand-fold spring — is a famous limestone canyon site near Dehradun where sulfurous waters cascade down travertine terraces in multiple streams. The cool Himalayan air mixes with warm spring mist to create a refreshing micro-climate popular with Delhi weekend visitors. The natural cave pools at the base of the falls are the most sought-after spots for an extended soak.
