Opened in April 2021 in Kópavogur, just outside Reykjavik, Sky Lagoon was built on a clear architectural idea: blend the low silhouette of traditional Icelandic turf houses with the dark tones of the surrounding lava fields. The turf wall bordering the lagoon was built using the ancient klömbruhleðsla technique, stacking dense volcanic ash tiles the way Icelanders have built homes since the 9th century.
The lagoon itself stretches 75 meters as an infinity pool facing the ocean, behind the country's largest single-pane window. The site built its reputation around the seven-step Skjól ritual: a geothermal soak, cold plunge, sauna, cold mist, sea-salt scrub, steam bath, and a crowberry elixir to finish — a sequence designed as an echo of older Icelandic bathing customs, including the small Snorralaug pool in Reykholt, believed to be the oldest human-used pool in the country.
