Terme di Stabiae rises at Castellammare di Stabia, a port city in the Metropolitan City of Naples at the foot of the Lattari Mountains on the southern shore of the Bay of Naples, where chloride- and bicarbonate-rich mineral springs have been exploited since Roman antiquity. The ancient town of Stabiae was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and Pliny the Elder died here attempting to rescue survivors — bathing in the thermal waters that survived this catastrophe connects visitors to one of antiquity's most dramatic geological events. The 28 springs of Castellammare di Stabia, used by the Bourbon royal court who built a spa palace here in the 18th century, offer one of the most historically layered thermal experiences in southern Italy.

Insider tip — Terme di Stabiae sits at the foot of Mount Faito on the Bay of Naples, where volcanic geology has fed mineral springs since Roman times — ancient Stabiae was both spa town and Pliny the Elder's last refuge. The bicarbonate-rich waters are traditionally used for respiratory and digestive cures. The views across the bay toward Vesuvius are unmatched.
