Terme Preistoriche di Montegrotto in the Euganean Hills of the Veneto region is one of the most historically significant thermal sites in Europe — archaeological excavations have revealed continuous human use of these springs since the Bronze Age, with Roman bathing complexes among the most extensively excavated in all of Italy. The springs here are artesian, emerging under natural pressure from deep volcanic rock at 87°C — the hottest natural thermal waters in Europe — before being cooled for bathing. The complex sulphate-chloride-bicarbonate-ferruginous composition of the waters makes them particularly effective for rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions. Together with nearby Abano Terme, Montegrotto forms part of the largest thermal tourism district in Europe, welcoming millions of visitors annually to the beautiful Euganean Hills landscape.
