The bicarbonate water surfaces at a notably elevated 47 °C, and its strongly alkaline pH of 9 gives it a silky, almost velvety quality on the skin that regular onsen visitors describe as exceptionally smooth. Traditionally appreciated for its softening effect, this type of alkaline water is sometimes called bijin-no-yu — the water of beauty — in Japanese bathing culture.
