Nukabira Onsen is a celebrated mountain resort and hot spring in Kamishihoro town of the Tokachi subprefecture in eastern Hokkaido, situated on the shores of the scenic Nukabira Reservoir amid the Daisetsuzan mountain foothills — the largest national park in Japan, encompassing a volcanic plateau that is the first place in Japan where autumn foliage colors appear each year. The siliceous thermal waters provide velvety skin-softening warmth in an environment of spectacular northern wilderness, where the surrounding forests harbor brown bears, deer, and foxes, and winter temperatures regularly drop below -30°C — making the onsen's warming embrace particularly precious.
