Yugawara Onsen

Yugawara Onsen is a celebrated valley hot spring town in Yugawara in Kanagawa Prefecture, one of the Kanto region's most beloved traditional spa destinations, where siliceous thermal waters have attracted Tokyo's artists, writers, and intellectuals since the Meiji era — including the novelist Natsume Sōseki, the poet Yosano Akiko, and the writer Tanizaki Jun'ichirō, who found in Yugawara's forested valley a creative refuge from the urban pressures of Tokyo. The thermal town, nestled at the base of the Amagi mountain range where a narrow valley meets the Tokai-do coast, is famously associated with the tradition of sōsaku onsen — the creative hot spring — where writers, painters, and musicians retreated to produce important works of Japanese literature and art in the tranquil forest-bathing atmosphere of the siliceous spring resort. Today the siliceous waters, literary heritage, traditional ryokan culture, and the beautiful plum blossom festival at Yugawara's Yoro Forest Park continue to draw visitors seeking the contemplative and creative energy that has defined this Kanagawa onsen since the late 19th century.
