Orochi Onsen is located in Nita Town, Shimane Prefecture, named in reference to the legendary Yamata no Orochi — the eight-headed serpent of Japanese mythology that was slain by the storm god Susanoo in the Hii River headwaters of this very region, a myth that is considered one of the foundational stories of Japanese civilization. The siliceous thermal waters here draw their name from the mythological landscape of the upper Hii River valley where Susanoo, expelled from the heavens, encountered and defeated the great serpent and discovered the legendary sword Kusanagi hidden in its tail — one of Japan's three imperial treasures.
