Taito Onsen

Taito Onsen is a community thermal facility in Taito Ward—one of Tokyo's smallest but culturally most dense wards, encompassing Asakusa's Senso-ji temple (the city's most visited tourist site, founded in 645 CE, with the Nakamise shopping street among Japan's oldest), Ueno's museum quarter (the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, Ueno Zoo), and Yanaka (one of the few Tokyo neighborhoods whose traditional shitamachi streetscape survived both the 1923 earthquake and World War II bombing intact). The siliceous mineral waters provide warm, daily bathing for a ward whose cultural density encompasses 1,400 years of Buddhist heritage at Senso-ji, the greatest concentration of museums in Japan at Ueno, and the most authentic surviving pre-war neighborhood streetscape in Tokyo at Yanaka, making Taito Ward one of the most historically and culturally layered small territories in any world city. The Senso-ji's lantern-lit Nakamise, the Yanaka cemetery's ancient plum trees, and the warm mineral waters of the neighborhood onsen invite visitors to soak in the ancient, layered thermal and cultural soul of old Tokyo.
