Biei Onsen is situated in Biei, a small agricultural town in the Kamikawa Subprefecture of central Hokkaido whose gentle patchwork hills of rolling wheat, potato, and beet fields in contrasting seasonal colors have made it one of Japan's most photographed rural landscapes, a living impressionist painting that changes its palette with every season and has inspired calendars, advertisements, and art exhibitions documenting its serene agricultural beauty. Biei is also home to the extraordinary Shirogane Blue Pond (Aoi Ike), an artificial drainage retention basin whose waters have turned an otherworldly cobalt blue due to naturally occurring aluminum hydroxide particles, creating an Instagram-famous scene particularly magical when the surrounding birch trees are snow-laden in winter.
