Kamikawa Onsen is found in Kamikawa, the gateway town to the magnificent Sounkyo Gorge in Daisetsuzan National Park, where the Ishikari River has carved a dramatic 24-kilometer canyon through Hokkaido's volcanic interior, lined with sheer columnar basalt cliffs, twin waterfalls (Ryusei and Ginga), and soaring rock pillars known as the Obako and Kobako formations that have made this one of Japan's most celebrated scenic gorges. The Sounkyo Onsen resort within the gorge is famous for its ice festival in winter, when enormous illuminated ice sculptures transform the canyon into a magical frozen landscape.
