Bihoro Onsen is situated near Bihoro in eastern Hokkaido, at the gateway to one of Hokkaido's most celebrated panoramic viewpoints — Bihoro Pass (Bihoro-toge), from which a sweeping vista reveals the vast caldera of Lake Kussharo, Japan's largest caldera lake at 79 square kilometers, shimmering in the distance amid the ancient volcanic highlands of Akan-Mashu National Park. The pass itself is a prime spot for autumn foliage, when the surrounding forests of birch, maple, and rowan turn the caldera rim to brilliant red and gold. The onsen here draw on the geothermal energy of the Akan volcanic complex, offering mineral bathing at the edge of one of Japan's most spectacular volcanic landscapes, where the immense scale of the Kussharo caldera provides a humbling reminder of the volcanic forces that continue to shape Hokkaido beneath its surface.
