Shari Onsen is found in Shari, the main gateway town to the Shiretoko Peninsula in northeastern Hokkaido — a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for the extraordinary biodiversity of its interface between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, where brown bears fish for salmon, Steller's sea eagles patrol the sea cliffs, and the world's southernmost seasonal drift ice (ryuhyo) from the Sea of Okhotsk creates winter conditions unlike anywhere else in Japan.
