Cut through by the Kinu River — whose name evokes an "angry demon" — the resort town of Kinugawa Onsen stretches along the dramatic gorges of Nikkō in Tochigi Prefecture. Its history dates back to 1691, when a hot spring was discovered on the river's right bank, a privilege long reserved for feudal lords and Buddhist priests. The resort grew further after rail service arrived in 1927.
